HerStory Malaysia
HerStory Malaysia is keen on creating spaces for women to come together and learn how to share their stories with others using artistic platforms. Our first project that ran from 2009 until 2010 entitled HerStory Films Project collected stories about love, sex, and desire from Malaysian women, with an emphasis on diversity and personal experiences of falling in—and out—of love in a distinctly Malaysian context. Five of the submitted stories were made into short films with the help of established Malaysian women artists in the country, and these films were shown as part of a traveling film festival in KL, Penang, and Sabah in October 2010.
This is a project organised by a loose collective of women, and not by any organisation. We are filmmakers, musicians, songwriters, poets, artists and activists who see the arts as a powerful medium which can effectively offer the public alternative stories that reflect the realities of women, and the complexities surrounding desire.
If you identified as a woman living in Malaysia and you have a personal story to share, especially in regards to love, sex and desire; please contact us about sharing your story in our online archive. If you would like to find out more information about us, get involved or be kept updated on our next art festival, do Email us or add us on Facebook.
