Viddsee Juree Awards is a competition held to celebrate jury’s picks of Asian short films from all genres: fiction, documentary and animation.

In this edition of Viddsee Juree Awards, Singaporean filmmakers will be eligible for an opportunity for their films to be watched and judged by a panel of international jury. Each short film shortlisted for the competition will have the opportunity to be watched by millions online on Viddsee.com and selected for film screenings around various locations in Singapore.

This competition is part of Viddsee’s commitment to celebrate and support filmmakers and film communities in Asia.

The screening and awarding will be held in Singapore, in August 2018. More details of venue and event rundown will be updated here.

Prizes

Viddsee Film Production Grant

Viddsee will present the Gold winner a grand prize of SGD8,000 as a Production Grant for the making of a short film. Viddsee will also offer the Silver winner SGD4,000 as a Production Grant. Both filmmakers will get to work closely with Viddsee Studios from idea creation to completion and distribution of this project on Viddsee's platform. Project is slated to complete within 12 months from the awarding date.

Microphones and Audio Accessories

RØDE will offer the Gold winner a NTG3 super-cardioid shotgun microphone, Boompole Pro, Blimp Wind Shield and Shock Mount System, PG2R Pistol Grip Shock Mount, WS7 Deluxe Wind Shield, and they will offer the Silver winner a VideoMic Pro+.

A 5-day Global Film & TV Program in LA

Motion Picture Association will offer the Gold winner a 5-day Global Film & TV Program in Los Angeles. The 5-day course includes a series of meetings, lectures and film events with production companies, agents, managers, entertainment lawyers, unions, guilds and film studios in Los Angeles, designed to provide an exclusive and informative introduction to the Hollywood film and television industry. The course will include a visit to the American Film Market, opportunities to present and pitch your projects to industry professionals, and network with other filmmakers from around the world. The Program will take place in late October/early November 2018.

Creative Cloud Subscriptions

Adobe will offer 10 finalist filmmakers a 12-month Creative Cloud All Apps subscription worth US$560 each.

Judges

Bastian Meiresonne

Bastian Meiresonne is a French Asian Movies specialist. He is a freelance film critic, (co)author of a dozen Asian Cinema books (“IMAMURA Shohei – A reality vanishes”) and consultant for several TV & movie distribution companies. He is currently artistic director of Vesoul International Film Festival of Asian Cinemas, Europe’s oldest and France’s sole Asian movies film festival. He works also as a consultant for several other French and Swiss Film Festivals such as Strasbourg’s and Neuchâtel’s International Fantastic Film Festivals and Geneva’s Black Movie Film Festival. He directed Garuda Power – The Spirit within, a documentary about Indonesian (Action) Cinema selected in 44 worldwide film festivals. He is currently preparing a documentary about Japanese filmmaker Kobayashi Masahiro, as well as about Thai Westerns and his first long feature based upon an idea by Japanese filmmaker Sono Sion.

Don Aravind

Don Aravind started experimenting with the video camera since the age of 14 where he was tasked to shoot school events. This interest pushed him to pursue a formal training in both traditional and digital filmmaking. In 2006, his short film titled “UNCALLED” received a special mention at the NOKIA RESFest10 Handheld Cinema Competition. In 2009, his short film “SAKKARANGAL” was a prize winner at the Winton Train International Film Competition in Prague and was subsequently screened at the BRNO16 International Film Festival. In 2013, his film “REN SHAO” won best short at the ASEAN International Film Festival. The film had subsequently traveled to many other festivals in various countries. Don has worked on more than 25 short films as a screenwriter and director. He currently directs for television and commercial content while still contributing to independent film. His television credits includes Singapore’s first English daily long form drama Tanglin.

Elvert Banares

Elvert Bañares is a director & multidisciplinary artist who has quietly been championing regional and marginalized Filipino films since the 90’s. He has been Consultant of the Cinema Program of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and sat as NCCA’s representative to the 1st & 2nd Cinemalaya Film Festival and the Board of then Film Development Foundation of the Philippines. In 1999, he founded eKsperim[E]nto Festival of Film, Video & New Media, one of the first festivals to screen digital films/new media in Southeast Asia. He has programmed for Antimatter Media Art (Victoria, BC), Outfest: Vancouver Gay & Lesbian Film Fest, Cinemanila and Cinema Rehiyon. He has been an official delegate to Shanghai and Beijing Filipino International Film Festivals; Prague Quadrennial, Czech Republic and the 2017 Asia Film & TV Summit in Qingdao, China. His recent short films have been selected in Pamplona (Spain), JOGJA-NETPAC (Indonesia), CineSeptiembre (Mexico), Cefalu (Italy), FACINE (USA) among others. Currently, he is head of the documentation team of the Philippines in Venice Biennale; member of the National Executive Committee on Cinema; co-founder of the first regional film grants in the Philippines, the Western Visayas Film Grants Program; and, Festival Director of CineKasimanwa: Western Visayas Film Festival.

General Guidelines

  • Films must be completed after 1st January 2016 till present

  • To join this competition, you are required to submit your film entry from 18th April 2018 onwards

  • You can submit more than 1 film entry

  • Film submission deadline: 12th June 2018

  • Films can be released theatrically or available online (i.e. YouTube, Vimeo) prior to festival competition

  • Films can be from all genres: fiction, documentary, animation

  • Films can be presented in their original native language/dialect. Non-English language films are recommended to have English-language subtitles hard-burned in the video or provided in .srt format with original copy (if you don’t have it, write to us)

  • Viddsee does not accept works in progress or trailers

  • Duration of films must be no longer than 30 minutes (including end credits)

  • Films selected for in-competition and out-of-competition in Viddsee Juree showcase will be streamed online on Viddsee’s platform and they will not be allowed for a takedown for a period of one year

To qualify, the film must meet two of the three following standards:

  • The Director is a current Singaporean Resident or a Singaporean

  • The Executive Producer and/or Producer and/or Screenwriter must be a Singaporean native, or resident

  • At least 70% of the film was shot in the Singapore

Here are the few steps to submit your film:

    Go to creator.viddsee.com

    Sign up for a Viddsee Creator account using your Facebook or email account

    The verification email will take about 1-2 mins to reach your inbox. If you don’t see it in your inbox, you can check your spam folder.

    Fill up your personal details to complete the film license agreement

    Click on the button Add a new film to start uploading your film

    For programming consideration, Viddsee accepts online screeners without any watermark/ logo. To do so, fill in your video file link currently hosted on i.e. WeTransfer, Google Drive, Dropbox link. Vimeo or YouTube links for the complete film are acceptable too.

    Indicate jureeSG2018 in the “Referral code” field box

    After you have filled in all the necessary details, navigate to step 5. Then, type in jureeSG2018 in the “Referral code” field box.

    Submit your film to Viddsee for curation. We will get back to you on the status of your film submission!

Overall Process

After submitting your film, there will be a selection process by Viddsee’s curation team. After the selection is completed, we will send an email notification to the selected filmmakers. If your film is selected for Viddsee Juree, it will be screened online on viddsee.com platform on 20th June 2018, and added to a channel collection named “Viddsee Juree Singapore”. Out of these selected films, Viddsee’s curation team will select the top 10 films to further participate in the in-competition segment. The winning films from the in-competition segment will be chosen by the Jury.
