Heartland
Built in 1958, Dakota Crescent is one of Singapore’s oldest government housing estates. The vintage design of the blocks and even its playground has even attracted a young generation of Singaporeans who are expressing a new appreciation for Singapore’s cultural heritage. This film captures how the community of residents and heritage enthusiasts come together to celebrate a unique neighbourhood in its last remaining days, after an announcement of the impending redevelopment of the estate is given. This documentary showcases the historical phases of housing policies that have allowed for Singapore to modernise despite its size limitations. This is also a portrait of the Singaporean kampong spirit, celebrating the diversity of the Singaporean experience and showing how social memories glue communities together.
