Single mother Darrel (40) lives with her teenage son Gary (16) in their 1-room apartment. The film opens with her brooding over a stack of bills by the kitchen window. She gets frustrated by the situation, and takes it out on Gary.

A violent argument ensues, in which Gary loses control of his anger and physically lashes out at his mother, finally storming out of the house. Darrell finds Gary sitting alone at the void deck and goes to sit beside him.
