"Majulah Singapura," Singapore's National Anthem, was composed in 1958 by the late Encik Zubir Said out of patriotism, even before he became a citizen in 1967. Initially written as an official song for the City Council at the request of Mayor Ong Eng Guan, it was adopted as the National Anthem on December 3, 1959, during Yusof Bin Ishak’s inauguration as Singapore's first Malayan-born Head of State.
